Ann-Julie Skarpmo

Ann-Julie Skarpmo is a Norwegian euphonium player, and is currently solo euphonium for The Norwegian Army Band North. Ann-Julie has emerged as a successful soloist, having performed several solo recitals the last couple of years, both nationally and worldwide. Ann-Julie has been an official Willson Artist since 2012.

Ann-Julie graduated from The Norwegian Academy of Music, studying with Sverre Olsrud, in 2011 with highest grades. The same year she took up the position of solo euphonium in The Norwegian Army Band North at the age of 22, making her one of the youngest musicians in all of the Norwegian military bands, and the first ever female euphonium player in the history of the Norwegian military bands.

The Norwegian Army Band North performs over 100 concerts each year, both in Norway and abroad. In her short period of time in the orchestra they have toured Russia and Afghanistan, among others. She is also featured as a soloist on many occasions. The most memorable so far was a performance of Jukka Linkola's Euphonium concerto at the band’s 100th anniversary concert in October 2011.

Outside her engagement in the military band, Ann-Julie has had an increasing number of solo performances. She has appeared as a soloist on both national and international festivals such as the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (ITEC), Oslo Chamber Music Festival, The US Army Band Tuba and Euphonium Workshop, ILIOS contemporary music festival and Brass Evenings at Mariinsky. She has also had solo performances with military bands such as the US Army band and the Norwegian Staff Band of the Armed Forces.

She shows a huge interest for new music, and for her recital at ITEC in Linz 2012, she commissioned a work by the talented contemporary Norwegian composer Ørjan Matre, which harvested very positive reviews. She has also recently commissioned a new Euphonium Concerto by Finnish composer Jukka Linkola, which will premiere in February 2016 with the Norwegian Army Band North.

Ann-Julie also teaches and free-lances on the side. She teaches private students on a weekly basis, and every summer she teaches the euphonium players at several summer band camps for teenagers, hosted by The Norwegian Band Association. As a freelancing musician, she has played with all the Norwegian military bands, with some orchestras, and with the Norwegian Opera and Ballet.
